Ashland must have been a good boy or something because the god/dess of thrifting has blessed him with a big tub full of trains, rails and ramps for $5 (I knew better than to spend retail on it!). He has loved cars and such (and he still does) but I think that trains are his first true obsession. He wakes up excited to play with them and goes to sleep talking about them.
He seems so very happy in his little train world. He makes all kinds of steam and whistle sound effect as he pushes and pulls his trains.
For other parents searching for train sets, here’s my opinion/observation. The set pictured above is part of Thomas the Train Take-n-Play sets.
- Wheels on Thomas Trains are set ever-so-slightly wider than wheels on Chuggington Trains, but, they are completely compatible on these plastic tracks (I think they are supposed to be compatible on respective wooden tracks too). Even IKEA trains (with wheels set much much wider) work great on these Thomas’ plastic rails.
- Neither Thomas nor Chuggington Trains work on IKEA wooden tracks (which makes me say…don’t invest much in IKEA train tracks, unless you will never get other trains!)
- I know that wooden toys of all sorts are popular now (and I appreciate the biodegradability…) but, I’m not actually a huge fan for most part because they are heavy, paints on them chip really easily, and won’t get clean once they are dirty. And who knows if the wood was harvested sustainably or paints are in fact safe on most of the wooden toys on the market. Most of the wooden toys that actually got played with were not fit for donation in about a year or so — which makes them, probably, not all that environmental.
- Having watched Ashland play with both wooden tracks and plastic ones, I think that plastic ones are easier for him to carry around from location to location (which he does all the time). They also work better on carpeted or otherwise non-even surface (like on the bed, for example).
- …that said, if you will have a dedicated table for it, I imagine wooden ones will be nice to look at and probably sit very well (because of weight). Maybe they are fantastic for older kids who have learned to play with them gently (and not chew on them or touch them with dirty hands)?
- Actually, Ashland also has plastic Chuggington tracks on which they have been racing matchbox cars on but it’s harder for Ashland to put it together by himself. The Thomas plastic tracks and wooden tracks are both easy for Ashland to put together without any help. Also, Thomas rails are a lot more visually appealing than Chuggington’s counterpart.
- Personally, I like Chuggington Trains better than Thomas Trains because they are more detailed, don’t have annoying faces on them, and look/feel better quality. BUT, Ashland seems to enjoy Thomas Trains better because they connect with magnets instead of plastic bails (which are hard to dis/connect without taking them off the track).
So there you go.
Immi is helping me mix up a batch of bread dough. She did a very good job actually, I didn’t have to do much with it when she was done!
We had a busy week and didn’t even get to have much of Saturday, so Todd and I tried to make sure we had a fun Sunday! Happy sunday starts with a bagel outing! (I think that Immi went through a growth spurt lately, doesn’t she look suddenly — big?)
Here’s all my favorite bunch.
Ashland and daddy.
…and then we went out for frozen yogurt.
Lucian snatched a spoon out of my hand!
Ashland is silently working his way through his.
…but then he seems to have noticed that Lucian would like some more.
…and then made sure that every last drop got eaten.
Todd put Lucian in the make shift cage (this fence usually sits in front of the fireplace) while he vacuumed. It looks mean (hey at least there’s blanket and pillow for his comfort!) but it’s quite impossible to vacuum with Lucian running around. He’ll try to pull out the plug and wrestle the vacuum. Repeatedly.
Because Lucian has very mild temperament happy disposition, I often forget that he is also VERY BAD. He is determined to to do bad things knowing he isn’t supposed to be doing it — all day long. He’ll climb on anything big or small (his favorite thing to stand on is a baby wipes tub! …its not that this is special to him, just that I try not to leave out anything bigger than this). If he sees a box, he’ll sit in it. If he sees an electrical cord (like when we are vacuuming), he’ll pull on it. If he sees any raised surface, he’ll climb on it. If he sees an open door/gate, he’ll run out of it. Oh, and the new bad thing he learned to do is pulling off his diaper. But you know, he is so charming, I forget to realize why I’m so tired at the end of the day! Aside from being bad, Lucian is also dedicated to making us laugh. And when he tries, he succeeds without fail.
With Immi out with Todd and Lucian napping, Ashland and I are making some breadsticks. He seems to be having such a great time! I have hard time imagining what Immi or Lucian will be like as a grown-up, but I quite often imagine Ashland as being college-age — being a quintessential “dude”, my idea is that he’ll essentially remain unchanged. Anyhow, as we made this, I saw in my imagination, Ashland as a college student living away from home, waking up (late!) still wearing comfy PJs and making bread. I also see him as a home brewer, but hopefully not until he’s 21! …Anyhow, here’s 2 year-old Ashland making bread.
…and here’s Ashland eating it.
No matter where Ashland and Lucian fall asleep, they seem to find each other at somepoint or the other while they sleep. [Lucian doesn't sleep in the crib any more, we moved that out some time ago because to our horror, he can climb out with the mattress at lowest setting! All I can say is that I'm glad that it was a hand-me-down from immi & ashland — I would have been annoyed if it were useful for such short time!]
Ashland took over daddy’s seat when he stepped away to take a phone call…and ate up his steel cut oats.
Lucian woke up and seem to be wondering why his gums still hurt. He is totally teething. He only has two bottom teeth and 4 on top completely out — ALL of the rest of his teeth seem to be coming out all at once! He doesn’t complain much though, and I often forget that he’s teething.
Ashland seemed a bit frustrated that his chuggington trains won’t fit through ikea bridge so we made some with legos!
I gave Ashland and Immi each a candy bracelet. But I didn’t think that Lucian should have one quite yet and had a great idea to give him his teething bracelet instead! It totally worked!! Though he kept looking over at Ashland’suspiciously.
